Are Electrical Inspections a Legal Requirement?

Commercial Fixed Wire Testing

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states employers are responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all their employees. This responsibility extends to making sure that all electrical equipment and installations are safe for use. Since commercial fixed wire testing verifies the safety of circuits and electrical systems within and around your premises, it has been made a legal requirement as it is in adherence to regulations such as the Electricity at Work Regulations and the Health & Safety at Work Act.

Commercial PAT Testing

While commercial PAT Testing is an effective method for ensuring the safety of handheld and movable equipment, it is not a legal requirement for businesses to conduct PAT testing. However, it is recommended based on the industry. For example, building sites are considered high-risk, so testing should occur approximately every three months. In commercial kitchens, portable and handheld equipment should be tested as often as every six months. For other stationary, movable, or IT equipment, it is advisable to conduct tests every 12 months.

Why Are They Important?

  • Ensures the safety of electrical equipment, protecting employees and reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Compliance with health and safety regulations, including the Electricity at Work Regulations, is maintained.
  • Prevents potential hazards like fires by identifying faults early.
  • Demonstrates a business’s commitment to safety and legal obligations.
  • Minimises the risk of costly downtime and legal repercussions due to electrical failures.
  • Contributes to efficient business operations by preventing interruptions.
  • Improves energy efficiency, which can lead to cost savings.
  • Protects the company’s reputation by maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Safeguards the financial health of the business through proactive maintenance measures.

It is recommended that commercial properties have their electrical installations inspected and tested every 5 years or more frequently if specified by regulations or insurance requirements. Some high-risk environments may require more frequent inspections.

The process includes a visual inspection to identify any obvious issues, followed by rigorous testing of circuits using specialised equipment. Our electricians will always check for problems such as poor earthing, inadequate insulation, and correct operation of safety devices like RCDs and circuit breakers.

The time needed varies based on the property’s size and complexity, ranging from one day to several days. Bigger facilities with complex electrical systems generally require more time for a complete inspection.

The process includes a visual inspection of the appliance and its cable, followed by a series of electrical tests to check for any faults. The equipment is tested for issues like insulation resistance, earth continuity, and lead polarity. After testing, each appliance is labelled with a pass or fail sticker, and a detailed report is provided.

While internal staff can perform this procedure if they have the necessary training and equipment, many businesses opt to hire professional commercial PAT testing services. Our experienced team will ensure thorough and accurate testing, adhering to the latest safety standards and regulations, which can be more reassuring in terms of compliance and safety.

Paul turned up promptly to view the job required and issued a written quotation within two days.

The team have done an excellent job including putting all the carpets back in place, tidying up, and vacuuming everywhere, and even shampooing the carpets were required to bring them back to their original condition. He and his team are hard-working, working 8 am till 6 pm every day to complete the job. Paul and his team are very competent; therefore I would highly recommend them to carry out any electrical work.
